Disney's Surfswell Island
Disney’s Surfswell Island is a fun interactive island where students learn about Internet safety with Disney characters. Students go on an Indiana Jones type adventure with Mickey Mouse and friends around Surfswell Island to learn Internet safety. (Admin, 2009) This site was developed to provide children and families with an entertaining and interactive way to learn about surging with web safely. When you complete the adventure with the Disney characters you are able print a certificate of completion as well as unlocking more games that review the information learned on the information. The certificate when printed states you have a “Certificate of Swelliness.” (Mann, 2000)
This site included specific suggestions for teachers implementing this application with different age groups starting at Preschool and Kindergarten up through grade 6. It also had suggestions for parents. (Mann, 2000) These suggestions are broken down by age group of Pre-K through K, 1st through 3rd grade, and 4th through 6th grade for the teacher. The suggestions include lessons ideas and discussion ideas to continue the lesson in the classroom after playing the game online. The parents guide gives some helpful hints of how to work with your child online and while playing the game. An additional extra the site provides is a glossary of technology related words that a student can use to better understand the readings.
Mann played the game with his two children who were preschool aged and then asked them what they learned from the game, they mentioned three big ideas: 1) Don’t share your password with anyone you meet online. 2) Don’t give your real name to anyone you meet online. 3) It’s only to share your screen name (one child called it your fake name) with someone you meet online. (Mann, 2000)
I found this site and game to be fun to play on as well as very educational for an elementary student. This is definitely a site I would use in my classroom when introducing internet safety as well as to encourage my students parents to use at home to continuously introduce the internet safety.
"It's important for parents to be aware of the sites where their kids are surfing and what information they are providing to others online. Disney's Surf Swell Island is a much welcomed and needed site that provides families with essential Internet safety and privacy resources that will allow them to have a positive and entertaining experience." (Disney, 2000)
