Looking at the current twenty-first century classroom students are being put into boxes that focus on math, reading, and writing. These boxes we are putting children in leave little room for creativity. Due to this lack of creativity in the classroom students are turning to the Internet to express their creativity. Many of the sites students are turning to to express their creativity are social networking sites, video posting and editing sites, and blogs. These sites allow the students to become creative and express themselves to the world of people using the Internet.
Students need to have the time to use their creativity in the classroom so why not bring the Internet into the classroom for the students to express their creativity on. Have your students write a daily blog rather than a daily journal in the classroom, or publish their stories online rather than making a final copy on paper that will be recycled at the end of the year. Make your students the published authors that they dream to be by bringing the Internet into the classroom and letting them publish themselves. When you are teaching a history lesson have students act out their interpretation of what happened in history and post on a video posting site like youtube or vimeo. Students will put more effort into their learning and performance knowing that they will be on the Internet for others to see.
The Internet is a place that fosters creativity in students and lets them run with their wildest ideas. In the classroom we often keep a student inside the box of right or wrong answers and do not allow them to be creative and think outside the box. Using the Internet in the classroom allows them to use the skills that are harnessed back in their classroom boxes.
So I ask why not bring the Internet into the classroom and let your students express the feelings we have been asking them to hold back all this time. Let your students show their creativity through the Internet.
