Collaboration
1. The act of working with another or others on a joint project
2. Something created by working jointly with another or others
(Dictionary.com, 2011)
Collaboration is used in business, schools, and many more. I have personally been a part of a school that encourages collaboration among teachers and felts this was very supportive and helpful as a new teacher. In my experience all of the third grade teachers would meet after school on Wednesday and do our weekly lesson plans for the following week. This time was not only volunteered time but also very beneficial in keeping the classes together through the year.
When doing some research on collaboration in education it was encouraged to use collaboration with not only your school staff but also with the students. When collaboration occurs in the school the quality of education is enhanced, skills are improved, and success is achieved. Students gains team building and communication skills through collaboration along with empowering the peer to peer learning. Along with the benefits in the classroom with using collaboration you are able to meet the NEST-S and NEST-T standards when you let students collaborate with others through technology. (Wikipedia, 2011)
One article I found stated that teacher collaboration improves the instruction in low-performing schools and achieved dramatic turnarounds. (McClure, 2008) This collaboration occurring in the schools is through teachers meeting in teams to review student work using standards, using each others thoughts to select targets for instruction, shared planning time, and team decision making. I myself find this collaboration helpful as a new teacher. In the articles I read the collaboration of veteran and new teachers helped to have a intergraded professional culture as well as made the newer teacher more likely to stay at the school with the collaboration atmosphere.
Through collaboration teachers share responsibility for student success. (McClure, 2008)
