Adaptive Curriculum
Arizona State University has developed a program online called Adaptive Curriculum. This program was developed for students in the sixth through eighth grade and is Internet based. Knowing the program is Internet based allows you to access it from anywhere and does not require installation of any kind. The online program focuses on math and science. The developers at Arizona State University aligned each of the online lessons to national and state standards. Each lesson online is 20-45 minutes long, written at a fifth or sixth grade reading level, and geared toward middle schoolers. (Finley, 2009) To use this program there is a fee that begins at $10 per student that has to be renewed annually. This fee allows the program to be used as part of a group using a projector or interactive whiteboard or individually at school or home. Each student receives a login that allows him or her access to the site.
The adaptive curriculum provided real life learning for students when supplies are not reasonable to by or safe to use in your own classroom. Many of the science labs that are available online use chemicals that would not be allowed in a traditional classroom and accurately show what results when the chemicals are used. This site allows students to do experiments that they could not do in an ordinary classroom. When a student is working on a Project Based Learning project they are able to access this site and do experiments that enhance their project.
Though this site has an annual cost it saves money for the school in supply cost. Students are able to use expensive supplies in an online format that has real life reactions and uses. I would love to have this in my classroom so that when students have questions in math or science that I am unable to help them answer due to cost of supplies I could refer them to the site where they could answer their questions.
The site has one math and one science lesson in which you can sample without paying the annual fees that will make you want to try all the other lessons. I feel this site is a great tool to have in the middle school classroom so that students can answer their questions through project based learning.
